To request an Orange County jail property release, first confirm which facility or agency holds the belongings and what authorization it requires. A family relationship alone does not tell you whether an item is ready for pickup. At Theo Lacy, the published procedure requires a property-release form signed by the inmate. Clothing exchanges and inmate funds have separate requirements. [1]
Start with a short description of what you need: keys, a wallet, stored clothing, account funds, or an item taken by police. The answer can determine which office should handle your request.
Immediate Inmate Information
Not sure which facility to contact? Request Inmate Information or call our assistance team at (714) 616-1387. Share the person's name, current facility if known, and the type of property you are trying to collect.
Identify the type of property first
| What you need | Where to begin | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Personal belongings stored with the booking | The holding jail's property or lobby staff | Is the item held here, and what signed release is needed? |
| Clothing | The jail's clothing-exchange process | Is an exchange required, and which replacement items are permitted? |
| Money in an inmate account | The facility cashier | What authorization is required to release funds? |
| Items held as police evidence | The agency's Property and Evidence unit | Has release been authorized for this case and item? |
A booking number identifies a custody record. An evidence receipt may instead refer to an agency case or report number. Keep both if you have them, and ask staff which identifier applies to your request.
How the Theo Lacy property-release process works
The Theo Lacy Facility FAQ says the person collecting property completes a release form in the lobby, and the inmate must sign before the belongings can be released. It lists a form-processing window of 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Confirm that window and the current procedure before making a trip. [1]
During that call, explain exactly what you hope to collect. Ask whether the authorization covers the requested items, whether anything must remain with the inmate, and whether the named recipient must appear in person. If you cannot reach the inmate directly, ask staff how the authorization is handled through the facility.
Do not plan around an assumed same-day completion time. The useful milestone is confirmation that the required authorization has been completed and the property can be collected.
Clothing and account funds need separate attention
Theo Lacy's FAQ says clothing cannot be released without an exchange, and funds require an inmate-signed Cash Withdrawal Form through the cashier. [1] Central Jail's FAQ likewise describes a clothing-exchange form completed by the person exchanging the clothes and agreed to by the inmate. [2]
If you are bringing replacement clothing, first ask which items, sizes, and quantities are permitted and where to deliver them. A regular visit does not establish approval to hand clothing to an inmate.
For money questions, state whether you want to deposit funds, request an authorized withdrawal, or ask about money after release. Our inmate commissary guide explains account-related basics; the cashier can confirm the procedure that applies to the transaction you need.
Property held as evidence follows a different process
An item taken during an arrest may be stored as evidence rather than included with ordinary jail belongings. The Sheriff's Property and Evidence unit requires an appointment for pickup. For evidence, its published instructions call for an investigator's release, the applicable case number, and valid photo identification. The Sheriff also limits evidence pickup to the listed owner and requires a power of attorney if that owner is hospitalized or otherwise incapacitated. Ask the unit before attempting to collect evidence for someone else. [3]
If a city police department holds the item, follow that agency's instructions. Use our Orange County agency directory to identify the appropriate contact. A jail property-release form should not be treated as permission to collect evidence from another office.
Keep any property receipt, inventory, or case number you were given. When an item cannot be located, describe it clearly and ask whether another agency retained it. Avoid assuming that every possession moved with the person during a custody transfer.
What to have ready before a pickup
- The person's full name, booking number if known, and confirmed current facility.
- A clear description of the items you want to collect.
- The required signed authorization or confirmation that the facility has it.
- Your valid government-issued photo ID and any additional documents staff request.
- The correct pickup desk, current service hours, and appointment details if needed.
- A copy of any property receipt or inventory associated with the request.
Ask staff how the items will be documented when handed over, and keep any receipt you receive. If you notice a difference between the inventory and the belongings provided, raise it with the responsible office while the transaction details are available.
If the person has been transferred
Start with the last confirmed holding facility and ask where the belongings are now. Central Jail's FAQ allows a designated person to receive property before an inmate transfers to state prison; it says property that is not released goes with the inmate. [2] That instruction does not establish the route for every city, county, or out-of-county transfer. Ask about the actual transfer before traveling.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pick up an inmate's belongings just because I am a relative?
Confirm the required authorization first. Theo Lacy requires a release form signed by the inmate before property can be released. Ask the holding facility how that process applies to you.
Can I collect only the person's keys or wallet?
Ask the holding facility whether those items are stored there and whether a partial release is allowed. Do not assume every item can be released separately or that a general authorization covers it.
Is collecting inmate funds the same as picking up belongings?
No. Theo Lacy's published instructions use the cashier and a separately signed Cash Withdrawal Form for inmate funds. Confirm the cashier procedure for the person's actual facility.
Can a jail property form get back an item held as evidence?
Evidence release has separate requirements. Contact the agency holding the item and ask about the case-specific authorization, identification, and appointment process.
